Filing System for Home Office

There are three kinds of paper, reference, action and trash. Reference files contain information you might need to look at in the near future but you have already acted on.  A simple filing cabinet is usually the best place to store these papers. Place your file cabinet in your home office where you have easy access.  At tax time, make way for the upcoming year's papers by moving old documents to an according file; then move the files to out-of-the-way storage.

Create an easily accessible system for action papers things that need immediate attention, such as bills or school papers.  The system you set up for your action papers and accordion file, wire desktop sorter, stackable drawers, colored folders, etc. should match your filing style.  Some people are abstract thinkers, able to remember and envision a file tucked away in a drawer.  And, some people are concrete thinkers, and that same file would disappear from consciousness and be out of sight, out of mind.  Honor yourself and your preferences, because that is the only way to create systems that work long term.
